Coaching is a professional relationship that assists individuals in achieving extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses, or organizations. It helps bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. Coaches partner with clients to design the life they desire, unlocking their clients' own brilliance and resources to achieve excellence and create purposeful, extraordinary lives. By providing clarity, coaching moves clients into action, accelerating their progress by offering greater focus and awareness of all possibilities for creating fulfilling lives.
ILCT founder Patrick Williams described coaching as "a powerful, human relationship where trained coaches assist people to design their future rather than help them get over their past. Coaches aid clients in creating visions and goals for all aspects of their lives and in creating multiple strategies to support achieving those goals. Coaches recognize the brilliance of each client and their personal power to discover their own solutions when provided with support, accountability, and unconditional positive regard."
According to the International Coach Federation, coaches honor the client as the expert in their life and work, believing every client is creative, resourceful, and whole.
The coach's responsibility is to:
● Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve.
● Encourage client self-discovery.
● Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies.
● Hold the client responsible and accountable.
This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life, while enhancing their leadership skills and unlocking their potential.

Historically, there have always been "coaches" in society, such as town priests, shamans, elders, or mentors. Before the evolution of coach training programs, coaching was primarily used in the arts (voice and drama coaches), athletics, and the corporate world. Many executives hired outside consultants as coaches or mentors for an unbiased view of their business and personal lives.
Now, coaching is seen as valuable and convenient for the general public for "total life coaching." With formal training available for prospective coaches from various disciplines and work experiences, the general public can now find well-trained personal coaches to help them achieve their significant goals and desires in personal and professional life.
The philosophy behind coaching is that humans have immense resources of energy, wisdom, ability, and genius waiting to be activated. Partnering with a coach helps individuals utilize these resources to facilitate change and realize their potential faster and more easily.
Many early psychological theories (Adler, Jung, Ellis), and current theories such as Positive Psychology and "solution-focused" therapies are antecedents to modern-day coaching. These theories focus on behavior change through increased awareness and choices for desired future results and solutions to current problems, with the individual as the creator and artist of their life.
While coaching and therapy share some similarities, they have distinct differences:
Therapy: Focuses on the past's impact on the present, healing psychological dysfunction, and relieving emotional pain. The therapist is considered the expert with answers for the client.
Coaching: Focuses on the present and future, the client's strengths, life purpose, and goals, as well as working with clients to create possibilities to enrich their lives. Coaching assumes the client is the expert, capable of determining what is best for their lives, with the coach working alongside to maximize their potential and create extraordinary lives.

The coaching field and practice are growing and evolving due to its effectiveness. The demand for coaching arose when stressed executives sought help for their professional and personal lives. As companies downsized and outplaced employees and baby boomers turned 50, coaches were hired to ease transitions and help people get back on track. The profession has continued to expand because it works!
A 2014 Global Coaching Client Study conducted on behalf of the International Coach Federation found:
Coaching is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. It provides clarity, enhances self-awareness, develops skills, and fosters accountability. Through regular coaching sessions, individuals can achieve their goals, improve their performance, and maintain a healthy work-life balance, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful life.
This is evident from a 2014 Global Coaching Client Study conducted on behalf of the International Coach Federation, which found that individuals who received coaching reported significant improvements in self-confidence, relationships, communication skills, work performance, business management, time management, and team performance. The vast majority of those surveyed were satisfied with their coaching experience and would do it again.
